Situation
A power utility company in Western Europe needed to be able to manage their SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) equipment remotely from a central office. This is because the company was on a trend towards decentralized power generation and a "smart grid" approach.
Solution
To do this while keeping costs low, they decided to piggy-back off of an existing IP, packet based network infrastructure. The Mini-RTU units only had RS232 interfaces and thus the data needed to be converted in some way to travel across the network.

The IP6810 provided this conversion box as well as the necessary software to uniquely identify its location on the network. In short, the IP6810 took care of the networking side while the mini-RTU took care of the SCADA control signals. Currently, the IP6810 is used in a point-to-point or point-to-multipoint application using its embedded Terminal Server function. In the future, the IP6810 can be configured as an self healing device in a ring topology to ensure network integrity.
