Plug-in Cards Specifically for the Power Industry

As mentioned in the Teleprotection and the Smart Grid solution article, power companies are increasingly adding communications networks to their power grids in order to improve efficiency, drive new business models, and increase network reliability.

The drawing above shows a typical topology for a single NOC (network operations center) and local power substations. The O9500R and the O9400R are devices from Loop Telecom that provide transport over high speed SDH/SONET networks that are typically optical fibers. At the edges the AM3440 and the O9500R offer access to low speed protocols.

Certain low speed protocols are quite popular in the power industry. Loop Telecom offers plug-in cards specifically meant to convey these signals.

C37.94 Card

This card specifies optical transmission at low speeds. This is useful for relays and in substations and other places that have high voltage and currents, and thus high electric/magnetic field swings during fault conditions. In such places a copper wire would be vulnerable to interference, while a purely optical would not. Teleprotection using the C37.94 card is discussed in this solution as well.

RS232 Card

The RS232 card for the AM3440 and the O9500R has eight ports and can run in Sync or Async mode. This allows you to interface with RTUs and SCADA-based equipment to operate machinery.

Voice Cards

Loop Telecom offers a variety of voice cards. FXS/FXO cards can come in mini-size with four ports, or single-slot size with 12 ports, depending on your needs. E&M cards are also offered for legacy E&M phones. Magneto cards are especially useful for applications in the field.

Router Cards

The minislot router card (2 ports), minislot router-A card (2 ports), or the single-slot router B card with eight ports, allows you to setup a small LAN network for computers and other devices at the substation. The router can also act as a gateway for the small network to connect to the internet.

Codirectional Interface (G.703)

This single slot card has 8 ports and is specially designed for the G.703 timing standard. The data rate is at 64 Kbps and diagnostics/alarms can easily be setup.

This more complex diagram below shows all of these applications in use. Each substation has its own unique configuration of plug-in cards to meet its communication needs.
