VLANs on the Loop-IP6610

The Loop-IP6610 with VLAN (Virtual Local Area Network) tagging feature allows a user to subdivide a LAN into smaller units known as VLAN1, VLAN2, VLAN3, all the way up to VLAN 4094. A device in a particular VLAN can monitor traffic in that VLAN only, and cannot monitor packets in any other VLANs. This provides privacy and an ability to set priorities for different types of traffic.

Situation

A typical corporate security problem at head offices occurs when anyone on the local area network can see information from any department on the same LAN.

Solution

The Loop-IP6610 supports IEEE 802.1q VLAN tagging. This allows a network to be separated into smaller broadcast domains. All broadcast, multicast, unicast and unknown packets can be forwarded only to stations or bridge ports which are members of that VLAN. This cost effective feature simplifies network administration and increases network performance.
