Advanced Features of the IP6510-LN

The IP6510-LN Multiple WAN Router from Loop Telecom is ideal for situations that call for a simple L3 router with only a few ports but supports major networking protocols. Standards compliance and software features is one of the IP6510-LN’s strengths and Loop Telecom’s specialties. This page discusses some of those features and how they are useful.

Security –

IPSec, or IP Security, ensures security at the networking level instead of the application level as in SSH. Packets are encrypted, sent, and decrypted according to accepted industry methods. This additional security is important for government and military communications as well as for protection against corporate espionage.

ACL, or access control lists, can be used to filter traffic based on IP address, protocol type, port number, or direction. These can be used to block Denial of Service attacks from single machines or for administrative purposes to block certain types of traffic from users.

Virtual WANs over Fractional E1/T1s–

The IP6510-LN can have up to 4 physical E1/T1 ports and 64 additional virtual interfaces. These virtual interfaces are fractional portions of the E1/T1 port. This can be easily done because the E1/T1 port is made up of 32 or 24 discrete, separable timeslots.

Virtual interfaces act like physical ports to the rest of the IP6510-LN. This makes setting up other features such as security or multicasting easier.

 

Software Bridging–

As of Spring 2013, this is a future option. While the IP6510-LN is primarily a L3 routing device, it can be expanded to perform simple L2 switching. Planned protocols to support include STP/MSTP/RSTP and VLAN (tagging and Q-in-Q stacking).

Bridging is done in software, not hardware. The IP6820 Ring NTU and the IP7925 Ethernet Demarcation Device from Loop focus more on L2 protocols and are more accurately called switches.
